	This November the BFI Gallery presents an exhibition dedicated to the work of the legendary American dancer, choreographer and filmmaker, Yvonne Rainer (b.1934) whose practice is amongst the most influential on the newest generation of video makers and choreographers alike. In the last few years there have been a number of important publications on her work and museum shows dedicated to her but this is the first time she has had a gallery exhibition in the UK. The BFI Gallery show features Rainer's installation, After Many a Summer Dies the Swan: Hybrid (2002) to be shown for the first time in Europe and installation format projections of two of Rainer's most recent choreographies (as she has returned to dance in the past ten years), filmed by Babette Mangolte; RoS Indexical (2008) and AG Indexical with a Little Help from H.M. (2007). Although she is renowned in the world of art because of her innovative contribution to contemporary dance, Rainer is also remarkable because of her involvement with cinema later in her career, and her work is punctuated with references to both the history of dance and cinema. This exhibition concentrates on the reception and transformation of ideas in her work, such as those of choreographers Vaslav Nijinsky and George Balanchine, composer Igor Stravinsky, thinkers such as Ludwig Wittgenstein and Sigmund Freud, and filmmaker Georg Wilhelm Pabst. It features a presentation of Rainer's Five Easy Pieces, alongside video work by contemporary artists who work in the style of choreography for the camera. The artists are: Yael Bartana, Johanna Billing, Katinka Bock, Jonathan Burrows, Mircea Cantor, Köken Ergun, Michel François, Laurent Goldring, Sonia Khurana, Florence Lazar, Bea McMahon, Natacha Nisic, Adam Roberts, Anri Sala, Beat Streuli, Ulla Von Brandenburg, Su-Mei Tse, Uri Tzaig. 4/5 & 11/12 December. ABOUT YVONNE RAINER Yvonne Rainer was born in San Francisco in 1934. After training in modern dance in New York from 1957, she began to choreograph her own work in 1960. She was one of the founders of the Judson Dance Theatre in 1962, the genesis of a movement that proved to be a vital force in modern dance in the following decades. Rainer made a transition to filmmaking following a 15 year career as a choreographer/dancer (1960-1975). After making seven experimental feature films - Lives of Performers (1972), Privilege (1990), MURDER and murder (1996), among others - she returned to dance in 2000 via a commission from the Baryshnikov Dance Foundation for the White Oak Dance Project. Her most recent dances are AG Indexical, with a little help from H.M., a re-vision of Balanchine's Agon, RoS Indexical, a re-vision of Nijinsky's Rite of Spring and a Performa07 commission, and Spiraling Down, a meditation on soccer, aging, and war. Her dances have been performed in New York, Los Angeles, Vienna, Helsinki, Kassel, Berlin, and Sao Paolo. A memoir—Feelings Are Facts: a Life—was published by MIT Press in 2006. Rainer is currently the Claire Trevor Professor in Studio Art at the University of California, Irvine. She lives and works in California and New York. The Yvonne Rainer Project is curated by Chantal Pontbriand. NY Times -Bullying and Censorship @ the Smithsonian Institution

Bullying and Censorship

In an appalling act of political cowardice, the Smithsonian Institution last
week removed "A Fire in My Belly," a four-minute video clip, from an exhibit
called "Hide/Seek" at the National Portrait Gallery. The privately financed show
explores identity, gender and homosexuality in American portraiture.

The video, by David Wojnarowicz, is a moving, anguished reflection on the
artist's impending death from AIDS. It shows very quick glimpses of challenging
and, at times, disturbing images, including masks, a meatpacking plant, various
objects on fire and the artist undressing himself.

One of those images, 11 seconds of ants crawling on a crucifix, drew an outraged
denunciation from the Catholic League, a lay civil rights organization that
receives no church financing. It called the video "hate speech" and said it was
designed to "assault the sensibilities of Christians." A spokesman for
Representative John Boehner, the incoming House speaker, called for the
Smithsonian to shut down the exhibition or "be prepared to face tough scrutiny"
under the new Republican majority.

Secretary G. Wayne Clough of the Smithsonian immediately yielded, removing the
video from the exhibit. His excuse was that the video "was detracting from the
entirety of the exhibition." That is absurd. The exhibition is supposed to deal
with culturally challenging images. Indeed, some of the most important roles of
art and of museums are to challenge, disturb and enlighten.

The Catholic League is entitled to protest, as are members of Congress, although
the bullying from Mr. Boehner's office was chilling. Mr. Clough had a
responsibility to defend this work and to reject censorship. He failed. On
Monday, the Smithsonian announced that the exhibit will remain open, as planned,
until Feb. 13, but without Mr. Wojnarowicz's video. That is not remotely good
enough.

	Fluxus East The exhibition Fluxus East represents a first stocktaking of the diverse Fluxus activities in the former Eastern Bloc; the exhibition shows parallel developments and artistic practices inspired by Fluxus. Besides "classic" Fluxus objects and scores, the display includes film interviews with Fluxus artists, photographs, films, correspondence, and recordings of music that document the presence of Fluxus in the former Eastern Bloc. As an interactive exhibition, Fluxus East aims to facilitate a profound encounter with ideas, works and texts—some presented as facsimiles to permit intense study. In the course of its tour the exhibition has been developed further and considerably enlarged, including new documents and art works especially from Hungarian, Lithuanian, and Estonian collections. Acknowledgments Fluxus East was produced by Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, and funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation. Curator: Petra Stegmann Fluxus – Henie Onstad Art Centre When the Henie Onstad Art Centre was established in 1968, the aim was to be a cross-artistic and dynamic venue for contemporary art and modernism. This is also our goal today. In the 1960s and 70s the core venue of Fluxus related activities in Norway became The Henie Onstad Art Centre, which was the cradle of experimental art in the country. With this cross-over philosophy it falls natural that the Art Centre now also wants to work with and promote Fluxus. Henie Onstad Art Centre is the owner of a separate collection of Fluxus. This is the result of the significant donation given by Ken Freidman to the Art Centre in 2007. The donation was groundbreaking for the Art Center's continued work with the collection, which in recent years have included a full documentation and registration of the material. Even though the collection today embraces many artists and artworks that have arrived via different channels, the Art Centre has chosen to call the whole collection in its present form "The Ken Friedman Fluxus Collection. Henie Onstad Art Centre". Now, for the first time, the newly-registrated collection is on display in the exhibition Fluxus – Henie Onstad Art Centre. Curator: Caroline Ugelstad Exhibition Catalogue A fully illustrated catalogue of the Henie Onstad Art Centre's Fluxus collection in 268 pages accompanies the exhibition, edited and containing an essay by Caroline Ugelstad.
