| | | November 10, 2010 | | | New Yorkers for 9/11 Justice, an initiative sponsored by Human Rights Watch and other civil society organizations, wants to see the men accused of planning the 9/11 attacks tried in New York federal court rather than in the Guantanamo Bay military commissions. Our petition to President Barack Obama is open for signatures. More than 2,600 people were killed in the attacks, and New Yorkers and 9/11 family members should be able to witness the trial. There are a number of venues in New York besides New York City that would be appropriate for trials of this importance. The US federal court system has a long track record of prosecuting terrorism suspects and has successfully convicted more than 400 people for terrorism-related offenses since 9/11. During the same time period, the military commissions only secured five convictions. We believe that the importance of the 9/11 trials to the United States' reputation in the fight against terrorism cannot be overestimated. These historic proceedings must be fair – and be perceived as fair – and their verdicts must be viewed as credible. Sign the New Yorkers for 9/11 online petition and urge President Obama to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his co-defendants in federal court so Americans can finally see justice done. | Stand up for 9/11 trials in New York State.
