Free Leonard Peltier

Free Leonard Peltier
The government under pretext of security and progress, liberated us from our land, resources, culture, dignity and future. They violated every treaty they ever made with us. I use the word “liberated” loosely and sarcastically, in the same vein that I view the use of the words “collateral damage” when they kill innocent men, women and children. They describe people defending their homelands as terrorists, savages and hostiles . . . My words reach out to the non-Indian: Look now before it is too late—see what is being done to others in your name and see what destruction you sanction when you say nothing. --Leonard Peltier, Annual Message January 2004 (Leonard Peltier is now serving 31st year as an internationally recognized Political Prisoner of the United States Government)

Miss Universe Visits Guantanamo: 'A Loooot Of Fun!'

Miss Universe Visits Guantanamo: 'A Loooot Of Fun!'

The current 'Miss Universe' Dayana Mendoza (formerly Miss Venezuela) and 'Miss America' Crystal Stewart visited US troops stationed in Guantanamo Bay on March 20th, the New York Times reports. Here's Mendoza's account of the visit from her pageant blog last Friday. She says the trip "was a loooot of fun!"

This week, Guantánamo!!! It was an incredible experience...All the guys from the Army were amazing with us. We visited the Detainees camps and we saw the jails, where they shower, how the recreate themselves with movies, classes of art, books. It was very interesting. We took a ride with the Marines around the land to see the division of Gitmo and Cuba while they were informed us with a little bit of history.

The water in Guantánamo Bay is soooo beautiful! It was unbelievable, we were able to enjoy it for at least an hour. We went to the glass beach, and realized the name of it comes from the little pieces of broken glass from hundred of years ago. It is pretty to see all the colors shining with the sun. That day we met a beautiful lady named Rebeca who does wonders with the glasses from the beach. She creates jewelry with it and of course I bought a necklace from her that will remind me of Guantánamo Bay :)

I didn't want to leave, it was such a relaxing place, so calm and beautiful.

Bush's FTA with Korea - or Obama's?

Message body

Action Alert - August 5th, 2010
Bush's FTA with Korea - or Obama's?

Tough Questions Get the Goods. Bird-dog to Stop Bush's Korea FTA!

In a shocker, last month President Obama announced he wants to resolve outstanding issues with Bush's leftover NAFTA-style pact with South Korea -- and pass it through Congress. He still has not said if he will renegotiate Bush's deal in line with his excellent fair trade campaign commitments.

Powerful corporations are desperate for Obama to walk away from his fair trade commitments. We need to make our fierce opposition known today - and Congress must as well - or we'll get stuck with another Bush FTA. August recess is the time to get commitments straight from our elected officials that there's no way they'll support Bush's Korea FTA.

Sign up to bird-dog! Find your members of Congress at town halls, parades and county fairs, and get their commitment to support fair trade and oppose the Korea FTA.

The Korea FTA is becoming the battleground for Obama's trade policy soul. We've lost more than 5 million family-supporting manufacturing jobs since NAFTA. Unemployment hovers near 10 percent, and global food and climate crises fueled by unfair globalization policies are raging. If Obama still sides with multinational corporations against the public interest, he'll be lost to fair traders for good.

What is bird-dogging?

bird-dog (bûrddôg) v.intr. To follow a subject of interest, such as a person or trend, with persistent attention.
One of the most important things that you can do for fair trade is to "bird-dog" your members of Congress - which means following them around until they publicly address your concerns "on the record." The best way to do this is to attend a town hall meeting, a parade, a BBQ or some other public event where your representative or senators will be talking or participating.
Get started now! For tips and talking points, visit:: http://www.tradewatch.org/birddog

The best defense is a good offense. If we get solid commitments from all our members of Congress that they'll oppose any FTAs that don't deliver on Obama's own fair trade commitments, this loud political warning will help drown out the pro-NAFTA pressure from job-offshoring multinational corporations. YOU can help pull Obama back from the brink.

Sign up to bird-dog today, and get those firm "no on Bush's Korea FTA" commitments  so we aren't stuck with Bush's Korea FTA.

Thanks for all you do,
