Free Leonard Peltier

Free Leonard Peltier
The government under pretext of security and progress, liberated us from our land, resources, culture, dignity and future. They violated every treaty they ever made with us. I use the word “liberated” loosely and sarcastically, in the same vein that I view the use of the words “collateral damage” when they kill innocent men, women and children. They describe people defending their homelands as terrorists, savages and hostiles . . . My words reach out to the non-Indian: Look now before it is too late—see what is being done to others in your name and see what destruction you sanction when you say nothing. --Leonard Peltier, Annual Message January 2004 (Leonard Peltier is now serving 31st year as an internationally recognized Political Prisoner of the United States Government)

Miss Universe Visits Guantanamo: 'A Loooot Of Fun!'

Miss Universe Visits Guantanamo: 'A Loooot Of Fun!'

The current 'Miss Universe' Dayana Mendoza (formerly Miss Venezuela) and 'Miss America' Crystal Stewart visited US troops stationed in Guantanamo Bay on March 20th, the New York Times reports. Here's Mendoza's account of the visit from her pageant blog last Friday. She says the trip "was a loooot of fun!"

This week, Guantánamo!!! It was an incredible experience...All the guys from the Army were amazing with us. We visited the Detainees camps and we saw the jails, where they shower, how the recreate themselves with movies, classes of art, books. It was very interesting. We took a ride with the Marines around the land to see the division of Gitmo and Cuba while they were informed us with a little bit of history.

The water in Guantánamo Bay is soooo beautiful! It was unbelievable, we were able to enjoy it for at least an hour. We went to the glass beach, and realized the name of it comes from the little pieces of broken glass from hundred of years ago. It is pretty to see all the colors shining with the sun. That day we met a beautiful lady named Rebeca who does wonders with the glasses from the beach. She creates jewelry with it and of course I bought a necklace from her that will remind me of Guantánamo Bay :)

I didn't want to leave, it was such a relaxing place, so calm and beautiful.

Avaaz: Please Help: Israel's darkest hour
 - The World in Action Dear friends,

Brave Israelis are fighting for their democracy against escalating attacks on civil liberties and human rights from their far-right government. Help the non-violent peace movement of Israelis and Palestinians overcome the intimidation campaign against them -- donate now to support their efforts:

Donate now!
The Gaza aid flotilla attack was a chilling escalation of what peace advocates across Israel and Palestine are experiencing right now.

Radical extremism is rising in Israel, trampling civil liberties and human rights in the name of "national security". The foreign minister, elected on an openly racist platform, is pushing dark new laws that revoke citizenship for anyone who doesn't swear a loyalty oath, peaceful protesters are met with police violence, and people (mainly Palestinians) are jailed without charge. The media is under pressure, with some commentators alarmed at what they see as creeping fascism. (see sources below)

Many brave Israelis, including thousands of Avaaz members, are fighting for their democracy and for the rights of Jews and Palestinians, including an end to the blockade and the occupation of Palestine. Israelis could help break the Gaza blockade if they joined the next flotilla, but they are facing massive intimidation by the government. This could be the peace movement's darkest hour -- let's send hope. Click below to donate:

Specifically, donations will go to:
  • Support for Israelis to join the next aid flotilla in significant numbers -- this could be a game-changer in the effort to break the Gaza blockade.
  • Legal aid for Israelis and Palestinians who are constantly jailed for non-violent action.
  • Expenses for participants in non-violent action, including around settlement building on Palestinian land in Jerusalem and media efforts around these actions.
  • Infrastructure and training to build the peace movement in Israel over the long term, including online organizing.

Avaaz is a deeply pro-Israeli, pro-Palestinian, pro-peace community. Over 90% of our members support the goal of a two-state solution with safe and secure homes for both peoples. Today, the greatest threat to that goal, and to Israeli safety and security, is now its own radical right wing. That wing is driving an escalation of the conflict that makes peace impossible, and will only jeopardize Israel in the long run. Today, the causes of the Israelis and the Palestinians are one -- both want peace, security, and home to call their own, and that is the cause that Avaaz members all over the world stand with. Our community's members in Israel and Palestine are asking for our help to bravely fight for the cause we all believe in. Let's answer their call:

With hope and determination,

Ricken, Alice, Benjamin, Paul, Iain, Luis and the whole Avaaz team
