Free Leonard Peltier
The government under pretext of security and progress, liberated us from our land, resources, culture, dignity and future. They violated every treaty they ever made with us. I use the word “liberated” loosely and sarcastically, in the same vein that I view the use of the words “collateral damage” when they kill innocent men, women and children. They describe people defending their homelands as terrorists, savages and hostiles . . . My words reach out to the non-Indian: Look now before it is too late—see what is being done to others in your name and see what destruction you sanction when you say nothing. --Leonard Peltier, Annual Message January 2004 (Leonard Peltier is now serving 31st year as an internationally recognized Political Prisoner of the United States Government)

Miss Universe Visits Guantanamo: 'A Loooot Of Fun!'

Miss Universe Visits Guantanamo: 'A Loooot Of Fun!'

The current 'Miss Universe' Dayana Mendoza (formerly Miss Venezuela) and 'Miss America' Crystal Stewart visited US troops stationed in Guantanamo Bay on March 20th, the New York Times reports. Here's Mendoza's account of the visit from her pageant blog last Friday. She says the trip "was a loooot of fun!"

This week, Guantánamo!!! It was an incredible experience...All the guys from the Army were amazing with us. We visited the Detainees camps and we saw the jails, where they shower, how the recreate themselves with movies, classes of art, books. It was very interesting. We took a ride with the Marines around the land to see the division of Gitmo and Cuba while they were informed us with a little bit of history.

The water in Guantánamo Bay is soooo beautiful! It was unbelievable, we were able to enjoy it for at least an hour. We went to the glass beach, and realized the name of it comes from the little pieces of broken glass from hundred of years ago. It is pretty to see all the colors shining with the sun. That day we met a beautiful lady named Rebeca who does wonders with the glasses from the beach. She creates jewelry with it and of course I bought a necklace from her that will remind me of Guantánamo Bay :)

I didn't want to leave, it was such a relaxing place, so calm and beautiful.

Peace Action: E-news: From Afghanistan to the White House

Subject: E-news: From Afghanistan to the White House

Dear David,
In this month's e-newsletter we highlight our work in Afghanistan, an upcoming conference in DC, a perspective on nuclear disarmament from one of our board members, and introduce three new staff members. I hope you enjoy!

Peace Action brings the peace perspective from Afghanistan to the White House
Late September and early October was a busy time for Peace Action. Peace Action's Policy and Organizing Director Paul Kawika Martin visited Afghanistan as part of a citizen peace delegation, and upon return to the US went directly to the White House, where national Peace Action staff, board members, and local Peace Action members were participating in civil disobedience to draw President Obama's attention to ongoing opposition to the war. Click here to read the full article.
What Savvy Leaders Could Do to Move Toward a Nuclear-Free World (Obama--Are You Listening?) (article by Peace Action Board member Dr. Lawrence Wittner)
Addressing a U.N. Security Council Summit on September 24, 2009, President Barack Obama observed that the resolution unanimously adopted by the Security Council earlier that day "enshrines our shared commitment to the goal of a world without nuclear weapons."
But the enthusiasm for this measure among the representatives of major nations should not obscure the fact that securing their commitment to a nuclear-free world was for years an uphill struggle, one that began, with some political sleight-of-hand, in a nuclear superpower, the Soviet Union. Click here to read the full article.

Urge your Representatives to end the war in Afghanistan

The US is at a turning point on Afghanistan. President Obama continues to deliberate on sending more troops, giving us more time to pressure him to end the escalation and bring the troops home. Contact your Representative today, letting them know you want to see an end to the war

Three new staff join Peace Action!
Judith LeBlanc, Lisa Putkey and David Kunes have recently joined Peace Action. They will be focusing primarily on organizing around nuclear disarmament, ending the occupation of Afghanistan, and communications and media outreach. Read their bios here.

Equality Wisconsin Wins First Step toward Domestic Partner Benefits for Milwaukee County Employees

Subject: Equality Wisconsin Wins First Step toward Domestic Partner Benefits for Milwaukee County Employees

Dear David,
On Thursday, November 5, the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors voted to require a study of the fiscal and administrative effects of extending domestic partner benefits to its employees.  This is a major step in Equality Wisconsin's effort to make Milwaukee County accountable to all families.
Before the vote, Scott Walker and other county officials publicized greatly exaggerated estimates of the cost of extending benefits to domestic partners, and tied the study to county budget decisions, despite the fact that the study will be done at no additional cost to taxpayers.
Our staff provided all board members with crtical information regarding enrollment figures and cost of the City of Milwaukee's domestic partner benefit package, as well as similar data from other Wisconsin cities and counties that provide these benefits.  We mobilized our membership to phone and email their supervisors, urging them to do the right thing, and following the vote, we sent out press releases.
With your support and participation, Equality Wisconsin will continue to speak for you in our efforts to insure equal rights for all citizens of our state.

What we have here is not an announcement that all terrorism suspects are entitled to real trials in a real American court. ACLU: Urge Holder to try all detainees in federal courts

Because Freedom Can't Protect Itself

Dear ACLU Supporter,

Your support and determination helped the ACLU win an important first step for justice today.
In a victory for due process and the rule of law, the Obama administration just announced that the defendants charged in connection with the 9/11 attacks will be tried in federal court rather than in the Guantánamo military commissions.

It's an important step forward towards restoring core American values of justice and fairness. Unfortunately, it is accompanied by an announcement that the administration has chosen to prosecute some other Guantánamo detainees in the unsalvageable military commissions system.

You and the ACLU have stood together and insisted, if America is going to remain a nation of laws, those held at Guantánamo Bay must have their fair day in court.

Today's transfer of these high-profile cases is a significant step forward, and we are grateful for the leadership of Attorney General Holder and the Obama administration. At the same time, we must insist that justice cannot be served by trying any detainees in the discredited military commissions system.

Send Attorney General Holder a message of support for an important step forward, and urge him to try all terrorism suspects in our tried and true courts.

The ACLU has argued all along that our federal courts have proven to be fully capable of handling terrorism cases involving sensitive national security information while protecting the American values of justice and due process.
Through the ACLU's John Adams Project, a joint effort with the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL), we have provided legal assistance to today's transferees. We've sought to raise awareness of the serious deficiencies of the Guantánamo military commissions. And we've succeeded in stopping the military commissions from fast-tracking illegitimate guilty verdicts and subsequent death sentences.
The ACLU continues to call for the abolition of the deeply-flawed military commissions and to insist that holding any prisoners indefinitely without charges or trial flies in the face of fundamental American ideals. Justice can only be served in our tried and true courts. While today's announcement is a step in the right direction, we can't let up until all of the Guantánamo detainees are given fair trials.

Send Attorney General Holder a message of support for an important step forward, and remind him that justice can only be served in our tried and true courts.

With today's announcement that the 9/11 detainees' cases will be transferred to federal courts, the ACLU/NACDL John Adams Project will be formally discontinued. However, the ACLU will continue to fight for a fair and constitutional resolution of all detainees' cases.

Thank you for the support that has made today's forward progress possible—and for standing with the ACLU until Guantánamo is closed, the military commissions are shut down and indefinite detention is brought to an end.

Feeding America: Urgent! Take Action Now to Help End Childhood Hunger

Feeding America - Formerly Known as America's Second Harvest - Hunger Advocate

Dear David-Baptiste,

Last fall, President Obama made a historic pledge to end childhood hunger by 2015.  To help move this goal forward, the President must include substantial new funding in his FY 2011 budget for child nutrition programs.  In addition, Congress must make important changes to child nutrition programs through the legislative process to ensure that these programs are more effective in reaching needy children.

Federal child nutrition programs–including the School Breakfast and School Lunch Programs, the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)–play a critical role in addressing the needs of food-insecure children.  We need your help to make sure these programs are strengthened.

It is up to the anti-hunger community to keep up the pressure and ensure that President Obama's budget includes enough funding for child nutrition programs to end childhood hunger by 2015.  Please take a few moments today to raise your voice and share your commitment to achieving this important goal.  We are asking you to take action in two important ways:

To take further action please visit the Hunger Action Center.

The numbers of food-insecure children in our communities are growing–and the time to act is now.  We need the full backing of Administration and Congress to help make an end to childhood hunger a reality.

Your support for federal child nutrition programs will make a difference for millions of children–in your community and throughout the nation.

Italics: Italian Art Between Tradition and Revolution

November 14, 2009 - February 14, 2010

Guest curated by Francesco Bonami, curator of the upcoming
Whitney Biennial

Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago
220 East Chicago Avenue
Chicago, IL 60611

Contemporary Italian art is full of contradictions and dualities: the past and the present; tradition and revolution; religion and sensuality; ancient ruins and high design. While the term "Italian art" conjures iconic frescoes, romantic human forms, and gilded richness, Italy is also a source of new creativity and innovation. From Arte Povera to minimalism, from post-pop to the neo avant-garde, contemporary Italian art forges new identities and offers fresh perspectives on its changing culture. Francesco Bonami says, "This country, blessed with so many exceptional talents, has trapped them in an invisible box. Italics does not pretend to rewrite 40 years of art history, but rather to tell a different tale in a new way."

Italics is the first major exhibition to substantially address the vast transformation in Italian art since the Guggenheim Museum shot Italian Metamorphosis, which focused on Italian art from 1943 to 1967. Italics begins in 1968, the year that marked the end of the post-war boom in the rebuilding of Italy after World War II, and the eruption of a global cultural revolution that radically challenged social foundations.

The exhibition opens in the fourth-floor atrium with a spectacular new sculptural work by Maurizio Cattelan, titled All (2008). Nine shrouded corpses, sculpted from white marble, symbolically lay to rest the ghosts of the Italian Renaissance and Baroque past, while offering commentary on the tensions of the present moment. Italics looks through the landscape of history to view the past not as a burden but as a source of endless inspiration. Immersed in the weight of Italy's history and tradition, Italics attempts to excavate a great, ancient, and contemporary civilization that is split between a glorious past and an uncertain future. Italics presents a close-up examination of artistic expression that grapples with an understanding of both local and international cultural transformations.

Italics also examines the revolutionary art production and experimentation of artists whose work spans all visual media to create thought-provoking dialogues across generations and cultures. Presented in arrangements loosely structured around themes of family, self, politics, and design, Italics connects the work of internationally known Italian artists from an earlier generation including two of the leading exponents of Arte Povera -- Mario Merz and Alighiero Boetti, along with Lucio Fontana -- to the Transavanguardia artists -- Francesco Clemente and Enzo Cucchi -- with a younger generation of artists such as Maurizio Cattelan, Stefano Arienti, Paola Pivi, Giuseppe Gabellone, and Luisa Lambri. Yet at the same time, Italics questions the desire to reduce Italian art to its well known artistic movements, as well as challenges stereotypical notions of Italy.

Italics: Italian Art between Tradition and Revolution 1968-2008 is a ground-breaking exhibition devoted to contemporary Italian art and creativity, co-presented by the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), Chicago, and the Palazzo Grassi, Venice, on view at the MCA from November 14, 2009-February 14, 2010. Guest curated by Francesco Bonami, curator of the upcoming Whitney Biennial, Italics presents more than 80 Italian artists active during the past four decades whose work offers a deep sense of originality and vitality, whether embracing their classical roots, breaking away from traditions, or reflecting the social transformation of Italy.
