Free Leonard Peltier
The government under pretext of security and progress, liberated us from our land, resources, culture, dignity and future. They violated every treaty they ever made with us. I use the word “liberated” loosely and sarcastically, in the same vein that I view the use of the words “collateral damage” when they kill innocent men, women and children. They describe people defending their homelands as terrorists, savages and hostiles . . . My words reach out to the non-Indian: Look now before it is too late—see what is being done to others in your name and see what destruction you sanction when you say nothing. --Leonard Peltier, Annual Message January 2004 (Leonard Peltier is now serving 31st year as an internationally recognized Political Prisoner of the United States Government)

Miss Universe Visits Guantanamo: 'A Loooot Of Fun!'

Miss Universe Visits Guantanamo: 'A Loooot Of Fun!'

The current 'Miss Universe' Dayana Mendoza (formerly Miss Venezuela) and 'Miss America' Crystal Stewart visited US troops stationed in Guantanamo Bay on March 20th, the New York Times reports. Here's Mendoza's account of the visit from her pageant blog last Friday. She says the trip "was a loooot of fun!"

This week, Guantánamo!!! It was an incredible experience...All the guys from the Army were amazing with us. We visited the Detainees camps and we saw the jails, where they shower, how the recreate themselves with movies, classes of art, books. It was very interesting. We took a ride with the Marines around the land to see the division of Gitmo and Cuba while they were informed us with a little bit of history.

The water in Guantánamo Bay is soooo beautiful! It was unbelievable, we were able to enjoy it for at least an hour. We went to the glass beach, and realized the name of it comes from the little pieces of broken glass from hundred of years ago. It is pretty to see all the colors shining with the sun. That day we met a beautiful lady named Rebeca who does wonders with the glasses from the beach. She creates jewelry with it and of course I bought a necklace from her that will remind me of Guantánamo Bay :)

I didn't want to leave, it was such a relaxing place, so calm and beautiful.

[ISM Updates] Funds needed for Tristan Anderson’s medical expenses

please distribute widely**

Funds needed for Tristan Anderson's medical expenses

Tristan Anderson, an American citizen, was critically injured during a
demonstration in the West Bank village of Ni'lin. Anderson was shot in
the head with a tear gas projectile from around 60 meters by Israeli
forces on 13 March 2009. (See: http://palsolidarity.org/2009/03/5324 )

Tristan (38), is currently in Tel Hashomer hospital near Tel Aviv. To
date, he has undergone 3 brain surgeries.  During the first operation,
part of Tristan's right frontal lobe had to be removed, as it was
penetrated by bone fragments. A brain fluid leakage was sealed using a
tendon from his thigh, and his right eye suffered extensive damage.
The long-term scope of Tristan's injuries is yet unknown.

Tristan has been a social justice activist for many years. He grew up
in Oakland, California, where he was introduced to activism at a young
age. Over the past years, Tristan has been involved in numerous
projects, including Food Not Bombs, a group that cooks for the
homeless, and an operation committed to stopping the destruction of
tree groves in Berkley California through sit-in demonstrations. He
recently traveled to the West Bank to show solidarity with the
Palestinian people.

As Tristan has been in intensive care for three weeks, it is certain
that his recovery process is accompanied by mounting medical expenses.
We ask that supporters around the world donate what they can to help
pay for Tristan's care. He is without medical insurance in the United
States and will need substantial financial assistance to continue the
long-term treatment that his injuries will require.

Tax deductible donations  can be made through the Northern California
ISM Chapter.  Please make checks out to ISM Support Group, with
Tristan Anderson Fund as the memo line.  Please mail to

The Assault against Gaza -- More Facts--Independent fact-finding mission of medical experts

A medical fact-finding mission on Israel's assault against Gaza, continues to indicate the urgent need for an independent, international investigation.

The communique below describes the mission, quotes briefly from its report, to which it also links, and lists three pressing practical conclusions entailed by the mission.

Rela Mazali

-------------------------------
Subject: Physicians for Human Rights-Israel and the Palestinian Medical Relief Society (PMRS) published today its special report on the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip, 27.12.2008 – 18.01.2009

Independent fact-finding mission of medical experts commissioned by Physicians for Human Rights-Israel and the Palestinian Medical Relief Society (PMRS) published today its special report on the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip, 27.12.2008 – 18.01.2009

In their report, the experts detail 44 testimonies by civilians who came under attack and by medical staff who were prevented from evacuating the wounded. The report provides first-hand evidence regarding the broader effects of the attacks on a civilian population that was already vulnerable on the eve of the offensive.

To download the Report click here

The experts collected samples of human tissue earth, water, grass and mud suspected to be contaminated by unidentified chemicals. These were sent by the team to laboratories in the UK and South Africa for analysis.

During the military operation in January, Physicians for Human Rights-Israel called for an external independent investigation into the events, for the rehabilitation of the Gaza Strip and for the opening of the Crossings.

Five independent experts in the fields of forensic medicine, burns, medical response to crises and public health, from Germany, Denmark, South Africa and Spain, immediately answered the call and traveled to Gaza between 29 January and 5 February 2009 for their first fact-finding investigation, and then to hospitals in Egypt, where some of the most seriously wounded were being treated.

The medical experts are: Professor Jorgen Thomsen from Denmark, expert in Forensic pathology; Dr. Ralf Syring from Germany, an expert in Public Health in crisis regions; Professor Shabbir Ahmed Wadee from South Africa, an expert in Forensic pathology;Professor Sebastian Van As from South Africa, an expert in Trauma surgeryand Ms. Alicia Vacas Moro from Spain, an expert in International health.

From the conclusion of the report:

"...Besides the large-scale, largely impersonal destruction that the team witnessed and heard of, it was especially distressing to hear of individual cases in which soldiers had been within seeing, hearing and speaking distance of their victims for significant stretches of time, but despite the opportunity for 'humanisation', had denied wounded people access to lifesaving medical care, or even shot at civilians at short range..."

One of the testimonies in the report describes the aftermath of an attack. Muhammad Saad Abu Halima had lost two brothers and a young sister; his wife and daughter were wounded. He told the delegation his experience of evacuation:

"…We were going down the street Kamal Adwan, and we had almost reached the school when the soldiers halted us. A tank appeared on the street and stopped close to the school. The soldiers were occupying the second floor of a building which was only 20 meters away from the street. They could see that we were all wounded and dirty from the explosions, because the tractor was open at the back. They shot at us, killing my cousins Matar Saad Abu Halima and Muhammad Hikma Abu Halima, who were driving us to the hospital. The soldiers ordered us to get out of the tractor, and they asked me to take off my clothes. I did it and they checked all my body. I think they were looking for explosives, but we were all injured and in pitiful conditions. How could we think of carrying explosives when my younger siblings and my own children were dying? Then, when I was almost expecting death, they shouted at me: "you can get dressed and go". They did not allow us to use the tractor.
I held my sister Shahed in my arms … but the soldiers said that the baby was already dead, so they forced me to leave her in the car. I tried to help my wife Ghada, who was completely burned, and they forced us to walk to the hospital. For about 300 meters the soldiers were shooting at our feet as we walked, raising so much dust that the wounds of my wife became full of dirt. After a while we saw a lorry on the road. It was overcrowded with people going to the hospital after the heavy attacks, but they made us room and we arrived at Shifa' Hospital…."

Another testimony in the report tells the story of the Abed Rabbo family. Souad Abed Rabbo, 54, told the team that the soldiers called to the family to exit their house. She, her daughter-in-law and her three granddaughters exited the house holding white flags:

"Outside the house there was an Israeli tank. It had come from the west towards the house that was facing north. It was 11.30 – 12.00. The tank was in the garden about ten meters from her, when she stopped to receive permission to leave unharmed. On her right side were the three girls; behind her was the daughter in law close to the door of the house. The soldier on the tank never replied. They were looking into each others´ eyes for 7-10 minutes, when suddenly a soldier opened fire and shot the granddaughter of the witness, Souad, in the neck and chest. She died immediately. They also shot Amal. She was hit in the chest and abdomen, and the interviewee saw her intestines come out. Amal died a little later. The daughter in law ran immediately into the house and was not hurt. The witness Souad Abed Rabbo was hit twice, as she turned around in a clockwise movement. She was hit in the left arm and in the left buttock. She did not see who shot. She assumed that the shots were fired from
gun(s) not from the tank, but she was not certain. She saw three soldiers on top of the tanks holding weapons…Samar was hit in the chest with the bullet coming out of the back…at the time of the interview she was in a hospital in Belgium suffering paralysis."

In their concluding remarks, the experts say:

"The underlying meaning of the attack on the Gaza Strip, or at least its final consequence, appears to be one of creating terror without mercy to anyone. Nearly all the people we spoke to slept cuddled together with the other members of their family in a central room of the house during the three weeks of attack. No one knew where or when the next bomb or explosion would occur. It appears that the wide range of attacks with sophisticated weaponry was predominantly focussed on terrorising the population. ..."

Hadas Ziv, Executive Director of Physicians for Human Rights-Israel:

The military was well aware that such an attack on a densely populated area would exert a terrible toll on the civilian population. It was the Israeli Army's responsibility to secure a way for the civilian population to flee the zone of combat.
At the moment, three things need to be done:
- A rigorous, transparent, and independent investigation should be conducted, one in which the victims' voices will be heard. The newly appointed investigative committee of the Human Rights Council is an important step in this direction. We hope Israel will fully cooperate with it.
- There is also an urgent need to open the Crossings and to allow the rehabilitation of Gaza.
- Israeli society needs to understand and assert its responsibility to end the culture of impunity so that such severe violations of international law and medical ethics will not occur in the future.

Procuring Academics for Empire The Pentagon Minerva Research Initiative

Procuring Academics for Empire

The Pentagon Minerva Research Initiative

By James Petras

The Pentagon's military strategists have recognized that they have suffered political losses, with strategic consequences in their recent military invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. US military support for the Israeli invasions of Lebanon and Gaza, the US-sponsored Ethiopian occupation of Somali, the coup attempts in Venezuela (2002) and Bolivia (2008), have also failed to defeat popular incumbent regimes. Worse still, civilian, family, community and national networks have reinforced the anti-colonial movements providing essential logistical support, intelligence, recruits and legitimacy.

Israel tries branding … again

Richard Silverstein gave us this heads-up about Israel's latest efforts to bypass reality and win friends and gain influence. NYT reports the new $2 million effort to re-brand Israel:
"When we show Sderot, others also see Gaza," said Ido Aharoni, manager of a rebranding team at the Foreign Ministry. "Everything is twinned when seen through the conflict. The country needs to position itself as an attractive personality, to make outsiders see it in all its reality."
This is old news. Several years ago at the Jewish Federations General Assembly in LA, I watched in person as Tzipi Livni and friends announced with great fanfare their first re-branding effort.  And boy, did it launch with a bang. That same month, before the latest Gaza war, and Netanyahu and Lieberman, mind you, Israel Today reported:
As if Israel's position in the world in not bad enough, a new survey published in the US Wednesday says that Israel is suffering from the worst public image among all countries of the world. The study, called the National Brands Index, conducted by government advisor Simon Anholt and powered by global market intelligence solutions provider GMI (Global Market Insite, Inc.), shows that Israel is at the bottom of the list by a considerable margin in the public's perception of its image.

The Index surveyed 25,903 online consumers across 35 countries about their perceptions of those countries across six areas of national competence: Investment and Immigration, Exports, Culture and Heritage, People, Governance and Tourism. The NBI is the first analytical ranking of the world's nation brands.
"Israel's brand is by a considerable margin the most negative we have ever measured in the NBI, and comes at the bottom of the ranking on almost every question," states report author Simon Anholt.
I actually found this heartbreaking. The bottom? For real? Like, lower than Iraq during a war? Or Sudan? or…
Also heartbreaking was the video footage of focus groups the Israeli branding team showed at the LA General Assembly. They said no matter what city they were in, respondents described looking at a house that represented Italy as one with laughing, drinking, yummy food, warmth. And to a T, each group described a house representing Israel as surrounded by concrete and barbed wire, with ultra-orthodox religious folks inside who didn't want visitors.
As far as the chance that the rebranding will work? Well, as any marketing person knows:
Anholt comments that to succeed in permanently changing the country's image, the country has to be prepared to change its behavior. He reiterates his strong belief that a reputation cannot be constructed: it has to be earned.
Duh.

Popcorn effect: the world is changing

For those of you old enough to remember making popcorn in a pot over the fire or stove, you know you have to wait a long time as the heat builds up slowly. Finally, just one lonely kernel pops. Then, an eternity later, another one pops on the other side of the pot. Wait awhile, and another one pops. When you're really hungry, it can feel like forever. But then something happens- the frequency starts to change and you get 2 or 3 kernels popping at a time, first here and then there. And then, the unthinkable happens- it's as though all the kernels start popping simultaneously in a big cacophony until there's no room left in the pot.
Well, it's hard not to feel like we're finally getting the popcorn we've been waiting for,  a sudden acceleration of open speaking and thinking, after years of more solitary popping of voices here and there. The war on Gaza has gone a long way in making that happen. The most recent example? After Jon Stewart and  Bill Moyers on Gaza, or the NYT's Roger Cohen's amazing columns, we have The Los Angeles Times, which on the same day, in a spirit of real openness to debate, printed Ben (son of Barbara) Ehrenreich's Zionism is the problem. who wrote:
Yet it is no longer possible to believe with an honest conscience that the deplorable conditions in which Palestinians live and die in Gaza and the West Bank come as the result of specific policies, leaders or parties on either side of the impasse. The problem is fundamental: Founding a modern state on a single ethnic or religious identity in a territory that is ethnically and religiously diverse leads inexorably either to politics of exclusion (think of the 139-square-mile prison camp that Gaza has become) or to wholesale ethnic cleansing. Put simply, the problem is Zionism.
and Judea (father of Daniel) Pearl's Is anti-Zionism hate? who lays out why he thinks "anti-Zionism is in many ways more dangerous than anti-Semitism."
… modern society has developed antibodies against anti-Semitism but not against anti-Zionism. Today, anti-Semitic stereotypes evoke revulsion in most people of conscience, while anti-Zionist rhetoric has become a mark of academic sophistication and social acceptance in certain extreme yet vocal circles of U.S. academia and media elite. Anti-Zionism disguises itself in the cloak of political debate, exempt from sensitivities and rules of civility that govern inter-religious discourse, to attack the most cherished symbol of Jewish identity.
Three cheers for the Los Angeles Times who will certainly be targeted by right-wing groups for daring to actually allow a real debate. A colleague of mine who suggested to me that while the rest of the pundit (and academic class) is shifting, quite dramatically, the dominant institutional Jewish world (of which my colleague is a part), not knowing what to do, is becoming even more closed and rigid. IMHO, Judea Pearl's essay, which focuses endlessly on we Jews as victims but fails to even once acknowledge the undeniable price paid by Palestinians for the founding of Israel, is an example of this deeply emotional but thoroughly corrosive phenomenon.

US/EU: Help Close Guantanamo by Accepting Some Detainees

"The Obama administration can't solve the Guantanamo problem on its own. European allies have long urged the US to close Guantanamo. Now they have a chance to help make that happen."

Joanne Mariner, terrorism and counterterrorism director
Obama Administration Seeking EU Support
April 3, 2009

(New York) - The European Union should help the Obama administration close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility by accepting some of the detainees who cannot return to their home countries because they would risk torture or other abuse, Human Rights Watch said today. According to media reports, the Obama administration yesterday made its first formal request to EU countries to resettle some of the detainees.

"The Obama administration can't solve the Guantanamo problem on its own," said Joanne Mariner, terrorism and counterterrorism director at Human Rights Watch. "European allies have long urged the US to close Guantanamo. Now they have a chance to help make that happen."

Of the approximately 240 prisoners still being held in Guantanamo, an estimated 50 to 60 - from countries such as Algeria, Libya, China, Tunisia, and Uzbekistan - have told their lawyers that they fear torture or abuse in their home countries and do not want to be returned there. Several of these men have been cleared to leave Guantanamo for years, but remain trapped there because neither the United States nor any third country has been willing to accept them.

Human Rights Watch welcomed a statement today by French President Nicolas Sarkozy that France would accept an Algerian detainee from Guantanamo, but said that much more help from European governments is needed.

"If every EU nation were willing to resettle two or three detainees from Guantanamo, the hardest part of the problem would be solved," Mariner said.

Included among those who have been cleared to leave Guantanamo for years are 17 Chinese Uighurs, most of whom have been in US custody since late 2001. Although the US cleared most of these detainees for release by 2004, they were not returned to China due to credible fears that they would be tortured upon return. For several years, the US government has tried to convince other countries to resettle the Uighurs. In 2006, Albania agreed to take in five of them, but no other country has yet offered to do so, in part because the US had not been willing to accept any itself.

In October 2008, a US federal court noted that attempts to resettle the Uighurs elsewhere had failed and ordered that they be brought to the US. In February, a federal appeals court overturned the ruling, saying that only the president - and not the courts - could permit the men to enter the US. Uighur communities and refugee resettlement groups in the US have offered to provide housing, job training, and other support services to the Uighurs if they are brought there.

"Now that the Obama administration has asked the EU for help, it needs to show that it too is going to shoulder part of the burden," Mariner said. "The easiest way to jump-start serious negotiations is for the US to act quickly to accept the Uighurs."

Victory for Hang Up On Motorola boycott!

Subject: Victory for Hang Up On Motorola boycott!

Moto Meets Our First Demand!

Dear David,
Last week Motorola Israel, Ltd. sold its Government Electronics Department to Israeli military contractor Aeronautics Defense Systems.  This means that Motorola will no longer be selling bomb fuses to the Israeli military.  The first demand of our boycott has been met!
While this first victory is sweet, it's far from the end of Hang Up On Motorola!  Motorola Israel (which is wholly owned by Motorola USA) still produces a number of products that support Israel's military occupation and entrench its apartheid system in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem.  Support Hang Up On Motorola now and ensure that we will stay steadfast until Motorola stops profiting from Israel's human rights abuses and violations of international law.  Make a $30 or greater contribution and we'll send you a poster featuring Parachutes Falling, the winning design from our Expressions of Nakba art competition.  Make a $50 or greater donation and receive a DVD of Occupation 101*.  Make a $100 or greater contribution and we'll send you both Parachutes Falling and Occupation 101*.

What does this sale mean for Hang Up On Motorola?

1) We have Moto on the run - we can win this boycott!  The only stated motivation for this sale is that it "would enable Aeronautics to provide more comprehensive solutions to its customers," and, on its part, Motorola has declined to comment.  Of course, we expect Motorola will be reticent to admit that our pressure had anything to do with this sale.  Read more about how pressure from international boycott & divestment campaigns are affecting Israeli businesses hereClick here to demand divestment from occupation - make a tax-deductible donation to this campaign now!
2) Motorola is still responsible for the damage that their products have done.  The "bomb family" that utilized Motorola fuses is responsible for the deaths of at least 28 civilians in Lebanon and Human Rights Watch recently found shrapnel with Motorola serial numbers on it at the site of a civilian building in Gaza bombed during Operation Cast Lead.
3) We must keep our pressure up!  Even after this sale, Moto still makes myriad products used by the Israeli military to continue its occupation and enforcement of apartheid. Motorola Israel has ongoing contracts with the Israeli military, both independently of and jointly with Aeronautics Defense Systems.  These contracts include military communications systems and surveillance systems for Israel's apartheid wall and illegal settlements.  Motorola Israel's subsidiary, MIRS, also makes mobile phones exclusively for Israeli settlers in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.  This sort of business reinforces norms of apartheid and cannot be tolerated.  Click here to organize the Hang Up On Motorola boycott in your area.

Our success so far is due to our supporters who have organized this campaign locally and who have sustained it by donating to our boycott & divestment work
.  Help see this campaign through to the end by contributing today.  A $10 donation will fund a new Hang Up On Motorola organizer's campaign kit.  A $50 donation will pay for one internet advertisement to raise awareness of this campaign.  $200 will pay for a US campaign presence at the Motorola shareholder meeting in Chicago on May 4th.  $500 will sponsor a tour stop for our Fall 2009 boycott & divestment campus organizing tour.

Get involved in organizing the Hang Up On Motorola boycott!  Sign up to get a Hang Up On Motorola campaign kit by clicking here.  Email the US Campaign's national organizer about demonstrating outside of the Motorola shareholder meeting by clicking here.  Enter our Spoof Moto video contest!  Click here to submit a video spoofing Motorola's advertising campaigns to tell the truth about its support for Israeli military occupation and apartheid.
*Please allow up to two weeks for shipping of Occupation 101 DVD.

[Cageprisoners] British complicity in rendition and torture pre-dates 9/11

PRESS RELEASE

5th April 2009

British complicity in rendition and torture pre-dates 9/11

A new report by Cageprisoners into the involvement of British authorities in torture and rendition details alarming findings that are too recurrent to ignore. Today Cageprisoners publishes, Fabricating Terrorism II: British Complicity in Renditions and Torture, which highlights 29 cases of individuals who have been subjected to renditions or torture with recurrent allegations of the direct involvement of the British officials even before 9/11.

Strongly reminiscent of the case of former Guantanamo prisoner Binyam Mohamed, the report details the experiences of Farid Hilali, who in 1998, years prior to the start of the 'War on Terror', was first tortured in Dubai, UAE and then rendered to Morocco where he was further abused – all with the knowledge and collusion of British intelligence officials.

Spokesman for Cageprisoners, Moazzam Begg, said of the report,

"In the summer of 1998 I was visited by MI5 in my house in England. They told me it was regarding the case of man called Farid Hilali. Hilali had written to me from Dubai, telling me he had been detained there and horribly tortured and forced to sign confessions. He also asked me to find him a lawyer. That is how I first met Gareth Pierce. Three years later, I was abducted by the CIA in Pakistan and subsequently held and tortured in secret locations, Kandahar, Bagram and Guantanamo Bay. MI5 agents interrogated me at every leg of my ordeal – including one who had come to my house in 1998. I hope that the police investigation into Mr. Mohamed's case will finally demonstrate just how many of us suffered like this and, in my case, a result of my own government's policies. That is why we have taken them to court."

Officials making inquiries into the case of Mr Mohamed would do well to consider the statements of Mr Hilali in assessing the extent to which British government agencies have actively colluded with foreign governments in extracting confessions by torture. This new report should also make it clear that Britain's complicity in torture was systematic and was applied equally - and immorally - against both foreign and British nationals.

Recognise Resistance! Delist Hamas now

Posted: 04 Apr 2009 01:13 AM PDT

On the occasion of the June 2009 European elections, we are launching an urgent appeal to all candidates for the 736 seats in the European parliament.
We ask that they actively pursue the immediate and unconditional removal of Hamas and all other Palestinian liberation organizations from the European list of proscribed terrorist organizations. We further ask that they acknowledge the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and, by so doing, recognise, Hamas as a legitimate voice for the Palestinian people's aspirations for national liberation.

Media, Revolution, And The Legacy Of The Black Panther Party --An Interview With Kiilu Nyasha

Media, Revolution, And The Legacy Of The Black Panther Party --An Interview With Kiilu Nyasha
I initiated a correspondence with George Jackson in early 1971, and months later, got a one-hour visit in the holding cell of San Quentin. I've met no one before or since more dedicated to revolutionary change....George was one of the three "Soledad Brothers," whose story began on January 13, 1970 when a tower guard at Soledad State Prison shot and killed 3 Black captives on the yard, leaving them unattended to bleed to death.

David

Today is the birthday of Martin Luther King.

Had he not been murdered, he and his family
would have celebrated his 80th birthday today.

Who killed him?

A lone nut with a vague grudge?

Yeah, right.
