Free Leonard Peltier
The government under pretext of security and progress, liberated us from our land, resources, culture, dignity and future. They violated every treaty they ever made with us. I use the word “liberated” loosely and sarcastically, in the same vein that I view the use of the words “collateral damage” when they kill innocent men, women and children. They describe people defending their homelands as terrorists, savages and hostiles . . . My words reach out to the non-Indian: Look now before it is too late—see what is being done to others in your name and see what destruction you sanction when you say nothing. --Leonard Peltier, Annual Message January 2004 (Leonard Peltier is now serving 31st year as an internationally recognized Political Prisoner of the United States Government)

Miss Universe Visits Guantanamo: 'A Loooot Of Fun!'

Miss Universe Visits Guantanamo: 'A Loooot Of Fun!'

The current 'Miss Universe' Dayana Mendoza (formerly Miss Venezuela) and 'Miss America' Crystal Stewart visited US troops stationed in Guantanamo Bay on March 20th, the New York Times reports. Here's Mendoza's account of the visit from her pageant blog last Friday. She says the trip "was a loooot of fun!"

This week, Guantánamo!!! It was an incredible experience...All the guys from the Army were amazing with us. We visited the Detainees camps and we saw the jails, where they shower, how the recreate themselves with movies, classes of art, books. It was very interesting. We took a ride with the Marines around the land to see the division of Gitmo and Cuba while they were informed us with a little bit of history.

The water in Guantánamo Bay is soooo beautiful! It was unbelievable, we were able to enjoy it for at least an hour. We went to the glass beach, and realized the name of it comes from the little pieces of broken glass from hundred of years ago. It is pretty to see all the colors shining with the sun. That day we met a beautiful lady named Rebeca who does wonders with the glasses from the beach. She creates jewelry with it and of course I bought a necklace from her that will remind me of Guantánamo Bay :)

I didn't want to leave, it was such a relaxing place, so calm and beautiful.

Hampshire College becomes first college in U.S. to divest from Israeli Occupation!

http://www.pacbi. org/boycott_ news_more. php?id=923_ 0_1_0_C

*Hampshire** College becomes first college in U.S. to divest from
Israeli Occupation!*

Students for Justice in Palestine | February 11, 2009

Hampshire College in Amherst, MA, has become the first of any college or
university in the U.S. to divest from companies on the grounds of their
involvement in the Israeli occupation of Palestine.

This landmark move is a direct result of a two-year intensive campaign
by the campus group, Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP). The group
pressured Hampshire College's Board of Trustees to divest from six
specific companies due to human rights concerns in occupied Palestine.
Over 800 students, professors, and alumni have signed SJP's
"institutional statement" calling for the divestment.

The proposal put forth by SJP was approved on Saturday, 7 Feb 2009 by
the Board. By divesting from these companies, SJP believes that
Hampshire has distanced itself from complicity in the illegal occupation
and war crimes of Israel.

Meeting minutes from a committee of Hampshire's Board of Trustees
confirm that "President Hexter acknowledged that it was the good work of
SJP that brought this issue to the attention of the committee." This
groundbreaking decision follows in Hampshire's history of being the
first college in the country to divest from apartheid South Africa
thirty-two years ago, a decision based on similar human rights concerns.
This divestment was also a direct result of student pressure.

The divestment has so far been endorsed by Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn,
Rashid Khalidi, Vice President of the EU Parliament Luisa Morganitini,
Cynthia McKinney, former member of the African National Congress Ronnie
Kasrils, Mustafa Barghouti, Israeli historian Ilan Pappe, John Berger,
Nobel Peace Laureate Mairead Maguire, and Roger Waters of Pink Floyd,
among others.

The six corporations, all of which provide the Israeli military with
equipment and services in the Occupied West Bank and Gaza are:
Caterpillar, United Technologies, General Electric, ITT Corporation,
Motorola, and Terex (see attached info sheet for more information on
these corporations. ) Furthermore, our policy prevents the reinvestment
in any company involved in the illegal occupation.

SJP is responding to a call from Palestinian civil society for Boycott,
Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) as a way of bringing non-violent
pressure to bear on the state of Israel to end its violations of
international law. SJP is following in the footsteps of many noted
groups and institutions such as the National Association of Teachers in
Further and Higher Education in the UK, the Israeli group Gush Shalom,
the Congress of South African Trade Unions, the Canadian Union of Public
Employees, and the American Friends Service Committee.

As well as voicing our opposition to the illegal occupation and the
consistent human rights violations of the Palestinian people, we as
members of an institute of higher education see it as our moral
responsibility to express our solidarity with Palestinian students whose
access to education is severely inhibited by the Israeli
occupation.

SJP has proven that student groups can organize, rally and pressure
their schools to divest from the illegal occupation. The group hopes
that this decision will pave the way for other institutions of higher
learning in the U.S. to take similar stands.

Petition: Release the Egyptian journalists and bloggers

AddThis
Support Egyptian journalist and their rights

Release the Egyptian journalists and bloggers

Target:
Freedom for all bloggers and journalists in Egypt
Sponsored by:
blogger Ahmed Doma and journalist Majdi Hussein
Egyptian military court ruled of imprisoning a blogger and a journalist for infiltrating to Gaza

Something wrong is going on in Egypt regarding the way it is dealing with journalists lately. The Egyptian government decided a couple of days ago to try the journalist Majdi Hussein, the secretary-general of the Egyptian Labour party in a military court - even though he is a civilian - because he broke the law when he tried to "illegally enter the Gaza Strip". And today a Military Court in Ismailia city in Egypt issued its ruling to imprison the blogger Ahmed Doma for a year and fined him 2000 pounds for infiltrating to Gaza, which happens to be the maximum penalty.

The Egyptian blogger was arrested last week upon his return from the Gaza Strip through the Rafah crossing, the Egyptian authorities accused him of infiltrating across the eastern border illegally in violation of the presidential decree 298 of 1995. If it was up to the Egyptian people they will all infiltrate to Gaza. The people of Egypt had always a strong connection with the Palestinian nation and were appalled by their government%u2019s stand when Israel bombarded Gaza mercilessly for 22 continuous days, while the Egyptian government stood there watching and blocking the way in the faces of the people who were starved to death and burned beyond recognition.

The Federation of The Arab bloggers demanded from the Egyptian authorities to release him immediately and unconditionally, claiming that the blogger Ahmed Domah did not commit a criminal act, on the contrary, he went to Gaza to offer his support to Gaza people.

The Federation of Arab bloggers expressed its member%u2019s dismay in a statement issued in this regard considering a prison sentence of one year and the fine of 2000 pounds is a harsh sentence, besides the fact that Ahmed was tortured psychologically during the investigation.

The Federation has requested of all bloggers and Arab human rights organizations to intervene and to work on his release for he was one of the most active bloggers.

DADA NMANIFESTO--Hugo Ball--Zurich, 14 July 1916

Dada Manifesto
by Hugo Ball
Read at the first public by Dada soiree, Zurich, July 14, 1916.

Dada is a new tendency in art. One can tell this from the fact that until now nobody knew anything about it, and tomorrow everyone in Zurich will be talking about it. Dada comes from the dictionary. It is terribly simple. In French it means "hobby horse". In German it means "good-bye", "Get off my back", "Be seeing you sometime". In Romanian: "Yes, indeed, you are right, that's it. But of course, yes, definitely, right". And so forth.

An International word. Just a word, and the word a movement. Very easy to understand. Quite terribly simple. To make of it an artistic tendency must mean that one is anticipating complications. Dada psychology, dada Germany cum indigestion and fog paroxysm, dada literature, dada bourgeoisie, and yourselves, honoured poets, who are always writing with words but never writing the word itself, who are always writing around the actual point. Dada world war without end, dada revolution without beginning, dada, you friends and also-poets, esteemed sirs, manufacturers, and evangelists. Dada Tzara, dada Huelsenbeck, dada m'dada, dada m'dada dada mhm, dada dera dada, dada Hue, dada Tza.

How does one achieve eternal bliss? By saying dada. How does one become famous? By saying dada. With a noble gesture and delicate propriety. Till one goes crazy. Till one loses consciousness. How can one get rid of everything that smacks of journalism, worms, everything nice and right, blinkered, moralistic, europeanised, enervated? By saying dada. Dada is the world soul, dada is the pawnshop. Dada is the world's best lily-milk soap. Dada Mr Rubiner, dada Mr Korrodi. Dada Mr Anastasius Lilienstein. In plain language: the hospitality of the Swiss is something to be profoundly appreciated. And in questions of aesthetics the key is quality.

I shall be reading poems that are meant to dispense with conventional language, no less, and to have done with it. Dada Johann Fuchsgang Goethe. Dada Stendhal. Dada Dalai Lama, Buddha, Bible, and Nietzsche. Dada m'dada. Dada mhm dada da. It's a question of connections, and of loosening them up a bit to start with. I don't want words that other people have invented. All the words are other people's inventions. I want my own stuff, my own rhythm, and vowels and consonants too, matching the rhythm and all my own. If this pulsation is seven yards long, I want words for it that are seven yards long. Mr Schulz's words are only two and a half centimetres long.

It will serve to show how articulated language comes into being. I let the vowels fool around. I let the vowels quite simply occur, as a cat miaows . . . Words emerge, shoulders of words, legs, arms, hands of words. Au, oi, uh. One shouldn't let too many words out. A line of poetry is a chance to get rid of all the filth that clings to this accursed language, as if put there by stockbrokers' hands, hands worn smooth by coins. I want the word where it ends and begins. Dada is the heart of words.

Each thing has its word, but the word has become a thing by itself. Why shouldn't I find it? Why can't a tree be called Pluplusch, and Pluplubasch when it has been raining? The word, the word, the word outside your domain, your stuffiness, this laughable impotence, your stupendous smugness, outside all the parrotry of your self-evident limitedness. The word, gentlemen, is a public concern of the first importance.

[WIB-LA] Codepink Shocked, Forced Out of Gaza, Organizing Return

From: CODEPINK <codepink@mail. democracyinactio n.org>
Sent: Wednesday, February 11, 2009 10:22:51 AMSubject: Where in the world is George Mitchell?

February 11, 2009

Dear Tony,

As we decorate pink hearts for Valentine's Day, our own hearts ache for the people of Gaza.

Our three person delegation just returned from a trip to Gaza, and Medea, Ann and Tighe are still reeling from the profound devastation they witnessed there--bombed areas that looked as if they had been hit by tornados, families living inside tents after their homes had been destroyed, countless lives irrevocably shattered by loss.

"The sights we saw in Gaza were tragic-a Goliath Israel pounding a small Gaza David, with international silence and complicity. Some 1,300 Palestinians have died, thousands have been wounded, and hundreds of thousands have been deeply traumatized. We deplore the use of rockets against Israeli towns by Hamas and other groups in Gaza, but the disproportionate response by the Israeli government and military is appalling," said Ret. Col. Ann Wright.

With the victory of an even more right-wing government in the Israeli elections looming, we must focus on the suffering in Gaza and stop a new round of violence. We are organizing a delegation to return to Gaza in time for International Women's Day, March 8th, hosted by the Women's Division of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency. Our group will provide solidarity for the women in Gaza and exert pressure on United States, Egyptian, and Israeli governments to lift the blockade. If we are not allowed inside, we will set up an encampment near the border to call attention to the need to open the borders and end the siege.

Here's how you can help:

Donate to send aid to Gaza. You can help us bring resources and gifts on International Women's Day to women who have suffered so much.

Join our delegation to Gaza from March 5-March 12 to support the women of Gaza and promote peace and human rights in the region. Some scholarships are available.

We also want to reach out to special peace envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell. On his first trip to the Middle East, Mitchell did not even go to Gaza. Now that he will be embarking on a second trip, ask him to visit Gaza, to witness the devastation firsthand and to listen to the voices of the women in Gaza.

Be sure to continue to educate yourself and your community about the current crisis in Gaza by visiting our growing resource page, which includes links to Medea Benjamin's blogs from Gaza, and our incisive Gaza digest.

Thank you for opening your hearts to our struggling sisters in Gaza this Valentine's Day (and beyond)!

With our own hearts broken but hopeful,
Audrey, Dana, Deidra, Desiree, Farida, Gael, Gayle, Jean, Jodie, Liz, Lori, Medea, Nancy, Paris, and Rae
