Free Leonard Peltier
The government under pretext of security and progress, liberated us from our land, resources, culture, dignity and future. They violated every treaty they ever made with us. I use the word “liberated” loosely and sarcastically, in the same vein that I view the use of the words “collateral damage” when they kill innocent men, women and children. They describe people defending their homelands as terrorists, savages and hostiles . . . My words reach out to the non-Indian: Look now before it is too late—see what is being done to others in your name and see what destruction you sanction when you say nothing. --Leonard Peltier, Annual Message January 2004 (Leonard Peltier is now serving 31st year as an internationally recognized Political Prisoner of the United States Government)

Miss Universe Visits Guantanamo: 'A Loooot Of Fun!'

Miss Universe Visits Guantanamo: 'A Loooot Of Fun!'

The current 'Miss Universe' Dayana Mendoza (formerly Miss Venezuela) and 'Miss America' Crystal Stewart visited US troops stationed in Guantanamo Bay on March 20th, the New York Times reports. Here's Mendoza's account of the visit from her pageant blog last Friday. She says the trip "was a loooot of fun!"

This week, Guantánamo!!! It was an incredible experience...All the guys from the Army were amazing with us. We visited the Detainees camps and we saw the jails, where they shower, how the recreate themselves with movies, classes of art, books. It was very interesting. We took a ride with the Marines around the land to see the division of Gitmo and Cuba while they were informed us with a little bit of history.

The water in Guantánamo Bay is soooo beautiful! It was unbelievable, we were able to enjoy it for at least an hour. We went to the glass beach, and realized the name of it comes from the little pieces of broken glass from hundred of years ago. It is pretty to see all the colors shining with the sun. That day we met a beautiful lady named Rebeca who does wonders with the glasses from the beach. She creates jewelry with it and of course I bought a necklace from her that will remind me of Guantánamo Bay :)

I didn't want to leave, it was such a relaxing place, so calm and beautiful.

John Holmes, the UN humanitarian chief, told reporters on Monday that officials believed as many as 25 per cent of the 548 people killed in the fighting were civilians " "This is, in our view, a humanitarian crisis," Holmes said. Gaza: Call Congress now!

 Dear friends,

Congress is back at work. Your member of Congress needs to know you support a Gaza ceasefire—and our new call-Congress tool makes it easy!

The newly-elected Congress has been sworn in—and has a chance to urge a comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza that would end the violence, including Israel's shelling and ground attack and Hamas's rockets; end weapons smuggling, and open Gaza's border crossings to ease the humanitarian crisis.

Follow the link below, enter your information, and we'll connect your phone directly to the offices of your Senators and Representative. It's incredibly easy, and won't cost you any more than an incoming call:

http://www.avaaz.org/avaaz_gaza_congress_action

The bloodshed in Gaza is escalating. Israeli tanks, airplanes and artillery bombard suspected Hamas sites in the midst of thickly populated urban areas, and Hamas continues to fight and fire rockets deep into Israel. More than 600 lay dead in Palestine, including more than 100 children, and eleven Israelis have lost their lives.[1]

Amidst the violence, more than 250,000 Avaaz members worldwide have signed the emergency petition calling for an immediate ceasefire to protect civilians on all sides.[2] The idea is winning the support of leaders in Europe, the Middle East and beyond. But Bush continues to block such a step, insisting he will only support an imposed ceasefire on Israel's terms rather than one based on negotiations with all parties. Without a fair agreement, the violence will only continue.[3]

This week, your Senators and Representative will almost certainly consider statements and resolutions related to Gaza. Most in Congress feel that they can't do anything more than offer support and sympathy to Israel and reaffirm its right to defend itself.

Congress needs to know that it can and must do more—that many Americans are horrified by the current violence, and want an immediate fair ceasefire to make sure civilians on both sides are protected. Click now to call your Senators and Representative using our easy-to-use new call-in tool to urge statements of support for a ceasefire:

http://www.avaaz.org/avaaz_gaza_congress_action

Thanks for everything you've done so far to advocate for an end to this round of violence.

With hope,

Ricken, Iain, Graziela, Ben, Alice, Pascal, Milena, Paul, Veronique, Luis, Paula, Brett -- and the rest of the Avaaz team

Dear David-Baptiste,

Life in Gaza before Saturday, December 27, 2008 was a humanitarian crisis. Today it is a nightmare.

I just got off the phone this morning with Salah, our Director in Gaza. Within the three-hour window of a "humanitarian corridor" when bombings have stopped so people can run out for food and supplies, he and one other staff member were able to get to the ANERA office.

Salah's next step in the short time of safety, is to go to the homes of staff members who have not been in touch to confirm their safety. He was able to report that most staff continue to be unharmed, but we cannot say they are safe. Psychologically, they are feeling the toll. Some are now displaced from their homes. They don't have electricity and they are running out of water and food. This story is the same for every family living in Gaza.

As soon as it is safe we will start distributing food, medicine and medical supplies.

And in addition to repairing buildings, peoples' lives will need restoration as well. More than half the population of Gaza is under the age of 18. No one living there feels safe right now. Recovery from this trauma will take special care. Our psychologist in Gaza reports that 75% of families needed help coping with life in Gaza before the bombings. Today it is 100% because even schools are unsafe. We are preparing a major program focusing on the psychological health of children and their families who will need help recovering, so they may feel safe again.

We are beginning an ongoing needs assessment and the list of priorities for providing help in Gaza continues to grow.

I want to thank everyone who has written to us expressing concern for the well-being of our staff and all of the innocent families hurting in Gaza right now.

One way to help is to remind everyone of the devastation innocent families were living through before bombs started dropping.

We have added a page to our website - anera.org/gaza_compare - to share far and wide with friends and family who want to better understand life in Gaza before the bombardment and how it is today.

Also, we are regularly posting updates on our website. Keep an eye on our homepage www.anera.org for updates from staff, press releases and other ways to help.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

NOBEL PEACE LAUREATE, MAIREAD MAGUIRE SUPPORTS CALLS FOR INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL TRIBUNAL FOR ISRAELI WAR CRIMES.

Nobel Peace Laureate, Mairead Maguire has today written to the UN
Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon and Father Miguel D'Escoto President of
United Nations General assembly adding her voice to the many calls from
International Jurists, Human rights Organizations, and individuals, for
the UN General Assembly
To seriously consider establishing an International Criminal Tribunal
for Israel (ICTI) in view of the ongoing Israeli atrocities against the
people of Gaza and
Palestine.

An ICTI can be established by the UN General Assembly as a 'subsidiary
organ' under article 22 of the UN Charter. Article 22 of the UN
Charter states the UN
General Assembly may establish such subsidiary organs as it deems
necessary for the performance of its functions. The purpose of the
ICTI would be to investigate and
Prosecute suspected Israeli war criminals for offences against the
Palestinian people.

Maguire said:

"In November 2008 I visited Gaza and was shocked at the suffering of the
people of Gaza under 'siege' as they have been for over two years.
This
collective punishment by the Israeli Government, has lead to a great
humanitarian crisis. Collective punishment of the Palestinian civilian
community by the Israeli Government breaks the Geneva Convention, is
illegal, is a war crime, and crime against humanity.

Instead of protecting the civilian community of Gaza and relieving their
suffering by lifting the 'siege', the Israeli military has carried out
10 days of consecutive bombing of civilians, by sea and air. Dropping
Israeli bombs on unarmed civilians, many women and children, destroying
mosques, hospitals, and homes, and devastating Gaza's infrastructure is
illegal and constitutes war crimes. The deaths of the people in Gaza are
now over 600, with more than 2,500 people injured – many women and
children. The infrastructure of Gaza has been destroyed, and the people
have been cut off from the world – including journalists, human rights
advocates and humanitarian workers, all locked out of Gaza, and unable
to go to the aid of the people.

The UN must help uphold Human rights and justice for Palestinian people,
by seriously considering establishing an International criminal tribunal
for Israel, (ICTI) so that the Israeli Government be held accountable
for war crimes."

Happy New Year Gaza Death

Meditations in a Time of Delusions and Lies

January 5, 2009

Hilton Obenzinger

Note:

I began writing little commentaries during the months leading up to the US invasion of Iraq in 2003. I called them "Meditations in a Time of Delusions and Lies," and I wrote them, as I explained, to keep from going insane in the face of faith-based idiocy and murder. I didn't expect to change opinions but simply to keep myself from exploding.

Should I stop? Should I instead write "Meditations in a Time of Clarity and Truth" now that Obama has been elected? I'd like to think I should – but somehow I feel that delusion and mendacity are still alive and well. I do have hope, but human stupidity has not let me down so far, so I'll keep the name. And the task: To keep from going insane in the face of official insanity.

If you want to read others, go to OpEdNews.com.

-----

In the hiatus before Obama takes power, Israel has decided to take advantage of the vacuum, get one more shot at decimating the Palestinians before who knows what happens once the neo-cons finally step down. The Israelis only have a couple of weeks, but that's just enough time to hand President Obama a fait accompli.

So now we have the Bloodbath of Gaza. Haaretz reported on Dec. 31 that the Israeli military planned the invasion when it was in the midst of negotiations to extend the cease fire 6 months ago. A while ago a senior office in the Israeli military warned the people of Gaza that they faced a "shoah," the Hebrew word for holocaust, in retaliation for Hamas's rockets. That officer was shushed by other Israeli leaders for being a bit too blunt. It turned out that he spoke the truth.

One more time the Israelis are trying to crush the Palestinians. Beirut 1982, now Gaza 25 years later. Can you guess the result?

Hamas is irresponsible to its own people, and launching rockets against civilians violates international law. But after every so-called peace agreement, such as the Oslo Accords, conditions get dramatically worse for the Palestinians: more land is stolen from them, more checkpoints, more targeted assassinations, more blockades around Gaza. And after every advance, such as the Israeli evacuation of Gaza, the shape-shifting occupation only takes a different form. So, the logic of despair goes, why not the absolutist religious violence of Hamas? Diplomatic and political methods have only allowed Israel to stall, allowed it to keep on building settlements and enforcing misery. Hamas may be thoughtless, but in their minds what do they have to lose? Why not try the Ghost Dance?

At the same time the world economy is contracting furiously. Financiers have gouged out huge "bail out" sums from the government, as if they're being awarded for wrecking their own capitalist system. Industries are about to collapse, state governments are on the verge of growing broke, jobs vaporize before our eyes.

American leaders scorned the Soviet Union when it collapsed. How much of a failure is the command control economy!  Unbridled free market is holy, and God has chosen Capital as his only Son.

But it turns out that the Soviet Union wasn't the only loser in the Cold War. Now Americans can see what it's like to be brought low by the collapse of delusions. What rational choice theory takes into account lies and greed in its econometrics?  Takes into account that greed breeds stupidity?  You don't need a PhD to realize that the Lords of Money don't really know what they're doing, don't even understand their own system. What rational choice are they talking about?

It was Reagan's arms race plus the Afghanistan quagmire that bankrupted the Soviet Union, even though the Soviet system played its own part in rotting from within. Bankruptcy and Afghanistan – why, that sounds like déjà vu all over again!

And, as if it couldn't get any crazier, the greatest Wall Street swindler in the history of the world turns out to be a Jew. Between the murderous Jews with guns and the venal Jews with money schemes, is history written by an anti-Semite? Where's that other stereotype, those Commie Jews?

But now the shit streams toward Obama like lava streaming down volcanoes in Hawaii . . .  Just a slight shift in power – his election was not a revolution, just a shift – and the universe conspires to give President Obama a welcome in blood and misery. What next? A mid-winter Hurricane? Huge California earthquake? Nuclear war between Pakistan and India? The Arctic ice cap dissolves like Alka Seltzer?

Just a shift. Imagine if his election were really a revolution?

Tell Obama to End US Complacency in Israeli Atrocities

Demand Real Change
In U.S. Policy toward Israel & Palestine

Dear david,

Since December 27, Israel's brutal attacks on the occupied Gaza Strip have killed more than an estimated 640 people and injured more than 3,000.  Today Israeli artillery shells landed on a UN school in the Jebaliya refugee camp, killing at least 34 people and injuring at least 55.

The Israeli attacks of the last eleven days have been carried out with weaponry and diplomatic support from the United States. President-Elect Obama has failed to speak out against the atrocities being committed against the people of Gaza.  Now is the time to let President-Elect Obama know that we demand accountability from Israel.

We suggest two ways to make President-Elect Obama hear your voice.  First, go to Change.gov to let the Obama transition team know that you demand:

1)    Pressure on Israel for an immediate and unconditional cease-fire

2)    Unimpeded access of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and a lifting of Israel's siege

3)    An investigation into Israel's misuse of U.S. weapons as a first step toward ending arms transfers to Israel

Once you log into change.gov, you can ask President-Elect Obama a question about U.S. policy toward Israel/Palestine.  For question ideas, check out our letter to Members of Congress by clicking here.

or

You can log into change.gov and vote on other people's questions, indicating your stance on issues like the bombing of Gaza, U.S. military aid, and Israeli apartheid policies.

Next, sign our open letter to President-Elect Obama and send it to all your friends.  This open letter will be published in Capitol Hill newspapers during the inauguration and lays out our plan for real change from the failed Bush Administration policies of unquestioning military and diplomatic support for Israel even in the face of its human rights abuses and violations of international law.  Click here to sign our open letter as an organization or an individual or click here to invite a friend to sign.  You can also stay connected by joining our Facebook group to pressure Obama.

U.N.-Run School In Gaza Hit By Israeli Fire; 40 Dead

In the most densely populated place on earth, with no escape from this prison, it is amazing how for the Israelis, practically no civilians have been killed.
In other words, all who die in Gaza are "terrorists," and all who are yet living are "terrorists" who are hiding among civilians.

Yet there is NO place to hide when the 1.5 millions people are crammed inside a prison, making attacks like "shooting fish in a barrel."

This is not a "War," but an out right massacre, murder on agrand scale, accompained by the toal destruction of the environement.

"The attack occurred about 10 yards outside the school in northern Gaza. It was the second Israeli attack to strike a U.N. school in the past few hours. In an airstrike earlier, three Palestinians were killed at another school run by the U.N. Relief and Works Agency.

In both cases, the schools had been used as shelters for people displaced by Israel's offensive against Hamas militants. More than 500 people have been killed in the 11-day operation, including many civilians.

Israel has made no comment, but in the past it has accused Hamas — a militant group backed by Iran and Syria — of using schools, mosques and residential areas for cover."

NPR.org, January 6, 2009 · Israeli tank fire on Tuesday hit near a United Nations school in Gaza, killing dozens of civilians who had apparently taken shelter there, Palestinian medical officials said.

Palestinian medical workers and witnesses said at least 40 people were dead, many of them children.

The attack occurred about 10 yards outside the school in northern Gaza.

Israel has made no comment, but in the past it has accused Hamas — a militant group backed by Iran and Syria — of using schools, mosques and residential areas for cover.

A top U.N. humanitarian official has condemned the violence and demanded an investigation.

The schools were hit on a day of heavy clashes on the outskirts of Gaza City between Israeli troops and Palestinian militants that left dozens of people dead.

It's like Dante's Inferno, a doctor describes Gaza horror

Mads Gilbert, a Norwegian doctor in Gaza, tells Sky News that the number of civilians injured and killed in Gaza proves that Israel is deliberately attacking the population.

Please watch and especially listen to this video. It describes the reality.. and in all the injured and dead he saw, he could only identify ONE as a military person. This is a massacre of civilians.
