Free Leonard Peltier

Free Leonard Peltier
The government under pretext of security and progress, liberated us from our land, resources, culture, dignity and future. They violated every treaty they ever made with us. I use the word “liberated” loosely and sarcastically, in the same vein that I view the use of the words “collateral damage” when they kill innocent men, women and children. They describe people defending their homelands as terrorists, savages and hostiles . . . My words reach out to the non-Indian: Look now before it is too late—see what is being done to others in your name and see what destruction you sanction when you say nothing. --Leonard Peltier, Annual Message January 2004 (Leonard Peltier is now serving 31st year as an internationally recognized Political Prisoner of the United States Government)

Miss Universe Visits Guantanamo: 'A Loooot Of Fun!'

Miss Universe Visits Guantanamo: 'A Loooot Of Fun!'

The current 'Miss Universe' Dayana Mendoza (formerly Miss Venezuela) and 'Miss America' Crystal Stewart visited US troops stationed in Guantanamo Bay on March 20th, the New York Times reports. Here's Mendoza's account of the visit from her pageant blog last Friday. She says the trip "was a loooot of fun!"

This week, Guantánamo!!! It was an incredible experience...All the guys from the Army were amazing with us. We visited the Detainees camps and we saw the jails, where they shower, how the recreate themselves with movies, classes of art, books. It was very interesting. We took a ride with the Marines around the land to see the division of Gitmo and Cuba while they were informed us with a little bit of history.

The water in Guantánamo Bay is soooo beautiful! It was unbelievable, we were able to enjoy it for at least an hour. We went to the glass beach, and realized the name of it comes from the little pieces of broken glass from hundred of years ago. It is pretty to see all the colors shining with the sun. That day we met a beautiful lady named Rebeca who does wonders with the glasses from the beach. She creates jewelry with it and of course I bought a necklace from her that will remind me of Guantánamo Bay :)

I didn't want to leave, it was such a relaxing place, so calm and beautiful.

National Day on Writing becomes official—and what you can do from here

From the desk of Kent Williamson

Dear David-Baptiste Chirot,

With the National Day on Writing right around the corner and the National Gallery of writing ready to "go live" on that day, I'm writing to offer some good news and a few suggestions for building momentum leading up to (and after) the big day.

The News!
Yesterday, the US Senate unanimously approved a resolution proposed by Senator Casey establishing October 20, 2009 as the National Day on Writing (see http://www.ncte.org/library/NCTEFiles/Involved/Action/NDW-Senate_resol.pdf ). This is great news, not only for NCTE, but for writers everywhere.

What Curators Can Do:

  • Log in to www.galleryofwriting.org to view/approve submissions. There are plenty of submissions awaiting approval, so please get in there and view writings so they can be visible on October 20. It is important that we show the nation (and the world) the depth and breadth of writing that is going on today.

  • Invite submissions-- If you don't have many contributions yet, please don't be concerned. Think about the 20th as a kick-off, the first time that most people will actually have a reason to take notice and consider posting something in this national archive of writing, which will remain open for public use through June 30.

Full-Day Webcast on October 20—How You Can Participate:

We are aware of hundreds of celebrations planned around the country on that day, and to draw attention to many of them, a full day webcast will occur from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. eastern time from studios at the New York Institute of Technology. (The URL for the webcast is http://live.nyit.edu/onsync/join.php?id=dbb81341cd4fc93a0465bae0005bc8f6&afid=0&pw —please share it widely).

As a local partner, here are two ways you can participate in that webcast as a means of introducing your gallery.

  1. Video—Produce a two- to four-minute video clip and either post it to your website and send us the URL, or click on this link and use the indicated username and password to send it to us:

    ftp://mpweb2.ncte.org
    username = ndwpartner
    password = ncte9348*!

    No high tech equipment is required—a simple "talking head" shot or two-person interview with a flip-cam will do. You can talk about why people may want to write for your gallery, how you see your community writing differently—any perspective on writing/composition you choose to take.

  2. Audio—Alternatively, you can audio record a message by simply calling NCTE and recording a podcast. Think of it like a "Gallery Walk" and let us know what kinds of things we'll find in your Gallery—or share specific pieces that are most powerful to you.

The method is simple—It's just like leaving a voicemail. Call 866-451-3397. When prompted, press 4 to leave a podcast. Please start by identifying yourself and your Gallery. Then record your message; you can then play it back and re-record until it sounds the way you want it to. We will ask you to limit your (final) message to four minutes. We will then play your message on the National Day webcast over a graphic display of your National Gallery home page.

We need your audio or video contribution by noon on Friday, October 16 so we can work it into the production schedule. There are additional visibility options--if you plan to host any kind of event on the day and would like to upload pictures or video clips from it, we will attempt to work those in to the webcast if you can send them to the FTP site or post them to your website by noon on October 20.

And, of course, we invite you to participate in the chat about the National Gallery and National Day that will be featured as part of the webcast all day on the 20th.

Sincerely,

Kent Williamson, Executive Director
