Free Leonard Peltier

Free Leonard Peltier
The government under pretext of security and progress, liberated us from our land, resources, culture, dignity and future. They violated every treaty they ever made with us. I use the word “liberated” loosely and sarcastically, in the same vein that I view the use of the words “collateral damage” when they kill innocent men, women and children. They describe people defending their homelands as terrorists, savages and hostiles . . . My words reach out to the non-Indian: Look now before it is too late—see what is being done to others in your name and see what destruction you sanction when you say nothing. --Leonard Peltier, Annual Message January 2004 (Leonard Peltier is now serving 31st year as an internationally recognized Political Prisoner of the United States Government)

Miss Universe Visits Guantanamo: 'A Loooot Of Fun!'

Miss Universe Visits Guantanamo: 'A Loooot Of Fun!'

The current 'Miss Universe' Dayana Mendoza (formerly Miss Venezuela) and 'Miss America' Crystal Stewart visited US troops stationed in Guantanamo Bay on March 20th, the New York Times reports. Here's Mendoza's account of the visit from her pageant blog last Friday. She says the trip "was a loooot of fun!"

This week, Guantánamo!!! It was an incredible experience...All the guys from the Army were amazing with us. We visited the Detainees camps and we saw the jails, where they shower, how the recreate themselves with movies, classes of art, books. It was very interesting. We took a ride with the Marines around the land to see the division of Gitmo and Cuba while they were informed us with a little bit of history.

The water in Guantánamo Bay is soooo beautiful! It was unbelievable, we were able to enjoy it for at least an hour. We went to the glass beach, and realized the name of it comes from the little pieces of broken glass from hundred of years ago. It is pretty to see all the colors shining with the sun. That day we met a beautiful lady named Rebeca who does wonders with the glasses from the beach. She creates jewelry with it and of course I bought a necklace from her that will remind me of Guantánamo Bay :)

I didn't want to leave, it was such a relaxing place, so calm and beautiful.

Greetings!

In this issue we take a look at massacre of Gaza, the terrible toll and the work of AIPAC in garnering congressional support of the criminal actions of the Israeli military.Review Protests of AIPAC in San Francisco in early December, then a larger protest in late January (Post-Gaza attack) in New York.

Don't forget to send in a donation. You can also buy a T-Shirt to support our work.

Gaza.
The Gaza-based Palestinian Centre For Human Rights (PCHR) puts the death toll at 1,285, with nearly 70% of the dead civilian. 280 were children. 111 were women. Over 4,000 injured, many with life-long debilitating injuries, including over 1,000 children and over 700 women. The damage to the infrastructure of Gaza is beyond belief. 2,700 buildings damaged or destroyed.

AIPAC did its best to garner political support the carnage, to stall efforts toward a cease-fire (as it did during the war on Lebanon), to blame the victims. An AIPAC-sponsored bill passed, defending this attack as "self-defense", passed the Senate by unanimous consent and the House with only 5 voting No and 27 voting "Present". (If your congressperson was one of the 32, please take the time to thank them... see the roll call here). See our Gaza and AIPAC page.

While most politicians blindly supported Israeli actions, there were some notable exceptions. Rep. Dennis Kucinich called for an investigation of possible violations of Arms Export Control Act. More importantly, grassroots action across the country protested Israeli actions. In the Bay Area, dozens of protests took place in those three weeks. It was clear that Israel was losing support on the American street, if not in the US Congress. It is the power of the people fighting for justice that will eventually create a change in US policy.

protests AIPAC Protests- From San Francisco to New York!

San Francisco Protest, Dec 2008 San Francisco, December 9, 2008
At this protest, organized by Stop AIPAC, we had about a hundred folks that turned out to protest their  extremist policies at an AIPAC event that took place at the Marriot Hotel. As usual, the protesters were a diverse group demanding a change in US policy that will lead to peace with justice. Pics and more here.

Times Square, January 29, 2009nyprotest09
The post-Gaza massacre event organized mostly by local students, brought out a larger crowd of some 250 people and ended with the blockade of the front doors of the Marriot Hotel by 10 determined protesters, who were arrested and spent a night in jail. This is a great way to start the year. Our goal is to have many of the AIPAC events that take around the country confronted by people who will not tolerate their political leaders in a relationship with a lobby for War.

We Need your help Now.
Stop AIPAC aims to oppose the militaristic agenda of AIPAC (the American Israel Public Affairs Committee) and replace it with an agenda based on human rights, respect for international law, and support for peace based on justice for all.

This will be a wonderful way to start out the new year...AIPAC'S annual budget is a whopping $100 million.  Ours is ... much less. So YOUR donation, even a modest one, can make all the difference.
