one of the greatest songs and performers and bands of all time
Jews all over the world are now celebrating Hanukah, a commemoration
of a military victory over a ruler who had banned the religion of the
people of Judea and had ransacked the Holy Temple. Against
overwhelming odds, the Maccabian revolt prevailed.
In times where hope seems to be in short supply, we can take
encouragement from this story. As the forces of occupation, violence
and conflict seem to be getting more and more entrenched, it is
important that we recall that the story of Hanukah is one of many
stories in human history of people triumphing over seemingly
overwhelming odds.
Although the High Court in Israel has once again delayed the Israeli
government from reducing power to the Gaza Strip, the plan to do so
has been essentially approved and is only days away from being
enacted. Indeed, in an ironic twist, it may yet still begin during
Hanukah, which is sometimes referred to as the "Festival of Lights."
The threat to cut power to Gaza is being held up until the government
can "prove" that this will not unduly impact the civilian population
of Gaza. But the fuel supply cut can only have one effect, and that is
to harm the people of Gaza. It does nothing to deter rocket fire from
Gaza, and will only convince the Palestinian people, in both Gaza and
the West Bank, of what they already suspect--that Israel's willingness
to participate in peace talks is merely a smokescreen for tightening
the occupation and the siege of Gaza.
For so many of us, this is the season of holidays. We at Jewish Voice
for Peace wish you a happy holiday season and hope you will join us in
reminding the world that there are no holidays for the besieged people
of Gaza or any Palestinians living under the yoke of occupation. We
ask you to join us in calling on the United States to work to stop
Israel from deepening the already devastating humanitarian crisis in
Gaza, to end tech American and Israeli isolation of Gaza and to work
to bring the Palestinian factions back together so that a
representative Palestinian government can work toward resolving this
conflict and ending the occupation, which is so devastating to
Palestinians and is hurting Israelis as well.
Wishing you and your family a happy holiday season,
The members, board and staff of Jewish Voice for Peace

Friends,
On Sunday 25th November I staged an interventionist performance at the
Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney. 'Dead Art' was a protest about
the absence of live performance art in the MCA, one of Australia's
foremost contemporary art institutions.
Dressed in curatorial black, tagged like a morgue corpse, I lay on
the floor in one of the galleries until I was forcibly removed by the
NSW Police. I chose the Contemporary Australian Art show as the
exhibition in which to display my dead body.
I came back to life outside the institution, where I was fined $220
by the NSW Police for 'Failure to comply with Police Directions'. I
was banned from the MCA for the rest of the day.
'Dead Art' was also a mourning ritual to commemorate the previous
evening's deposition of our Great Lord and Master, John Winston
Howard.
Enjoy the photos. More details to follow on the website.

Dear Friends,
Our editorial this month, by Julian Tait, relates to the ability of
freezing a critical point in time, by selecting it from a sequence of
images. With all that has been going on with videocameras and technology
lately, that's a clear tendency on what videographers are and will be
doing.
In our magazine section we bring you an interesting article on how the
so called photofinish photographs can be homemade, with a little time
and a used scanner that otherwise could end up forgotten somewhere in
your attic, you can experiment new ways of producing images that could
result on very interesing compositions.
We bring you two galleries this month, Ernesto Ramirez photographed some
of Mexico's most unacquainted atmospheres, like rooftops, ruins and city
wastes. Jose Luis Cuevas on the other hand, photographed 'The Smelly
one', amongst the most singular beer halls in old downtown Mexico,
documenting its darkness and solitude.
The Guangdong Museum of Art in China, consists of twelve indoor
exhibition halls covering an area of 8,000 square meters; each year, the
museum hosts nearly sixty exhibitions, one of these during this ending
2007 was 'The Gaze of 45 mexican photographers' which opened in 3 of the
12 halls, becoming the biggest exhibition of mexican photography in
China. We present you an article by Pilar Jimenez.
We regret the death of the photographer Jack Welpott this past November
24, Jack was a close friend of Pedro Meyer's.
I send you all my best wishes.

EDITORIAL
------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://zonezero.com/editorial/editorial.html
"We are all videographers now"
The inevitable convergence of the photograph and video.
by Julian Tait
"For most photographers Cartier Bresson's mantra, 'the decisive
moment', is instilled into our photographic psyche at a very early
stage. The ability to freeze a critical point in time, to capture an
image that has significance and meaning above all other, is what makes a
great photographer. One has to have the foresight and guile to be in the
position to capture the image in the first place and composition plays
no small part in that, but is the very definition of capturing a moment
becoming less relevant?"
========================================================================
EXHIBITIONS
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ernesto Ramirez (Mexico)
"Urban Archeology" and "Close to Heaven"
"Both works explore the tracks and nooks of Mexico City. Urban
Archeology examines the ruins and the city waste to document how these
remains, on the one hand, contain an aesthetic of the epoch and also how
the great urban concentrations promote the culture of waste.
Close to heaven is a visit to the urban rooftops, trying to explain how
these spaces have become an extension of the house; these territories
are the destination of all that nostalgic trash of what we once were."
http://zonezero.com/exposiciones/fotografos/ramirez/index.html
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jose Luis Cuevas (Mexico)
"The Smelly one"
"I stay at the bar, alongside two other alone strangers. I see Nora and
La Chihuahua and greet them in the distance. Eva comes down from the
dark floor above, an elderly gentleman follows her. Nora sees her in the
stairs and says – "You fucking Eva, did you do it two times?" Eva jokes,
and answers back "No, four", she leaves her purse on a table and goes to
the toilets, the gentleman washes his hands, she comes back and rinses
her mouth (her oral caressing abilities are well known and have made Eva
famous). Alcohol and sex, things around here can be summed up in those
two words.
So what brings me here, to this small sanctuary of men and women
over-enthusiastic about booze and lust? Why go to 'La Apestosa' (the
Smelly one) instead of any other place? There is no answer, and then I
drink, beginning to feel drunk, but not enough to lose the fear to take
out the camera and approach to people."

MAGAZINE
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guilherme Maranhao (Brazil)
"Photofinish and a home-brew digital camera"
"Very likely you already seen a photofinish image, either of a horse
track or from the Olympic Games. They all look alike, the background is
usually of a single color and seems stretched with a bunch of athletes
or horses as they cross the finish line of a race. There's a timeline
either at the bottom or at the top of the image, numbers that represent
elapsed seconds from the beginning of the race. These images were
generated by a camera equipped with a slit instead of a regular shutter
and 35mm film moving behind this slit. Nowadays the linear CCD
substituted the slit and made this cameras very similar to most scanners
we have (or maybe scanners are similar to those cameras)."
http://zonezero.com/magazine/articles/maranhao/index.html
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pilar Jimenez (Mexico)
"Mexican photography exhibition in China.
Exhibition is held at the Guangdong Museum of Art"
"The present diversity and vitality of Contemporary Mexican photography
can be seen in an exhibition with 450 images of 45 different
photographers, brought together for the first time ever in China by
master photographers Pedro Meyer and Francisco Mata.
The title of the exhibition is 'The Gaze of 45 Mexican Photographers'
and it is held at the Guangdong Contemporary Art Museum, one of the
three most important museums of the Asian Giant. The curators managed to
gather an all-inclusive collection with the work of photographers of
different ages, styles and temperaments, yet, this collection sums up
the plurality and rigor of Contemporary Mexican Photography.
'The map drawn by the curators of this show takes us to an intense
voyage through the visual cartography of Mexico in the 20th and 21st
Centuries', said Wang Rui, photography critic and curator, who is
considered China's top expert in Mexican Photography."

IN MEMORIAM
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jack Welpott (USA)
(1923-2007)
"Jack was an old friend with whom I corresponded in an irregular way,
basically because our mutual schedules would make it difficult to do
otherwise, yet our emotional communication always flowed back and
forth over the years in an uninterrupted manner. There was a real bond
between us and a lot of mutual respect.
I tried to have his work shown here in ZoneZero, and in trying to do
something special, Jack would always ask for more time to send me some
of his images. In the end it sadly never happened, for what ever reasons
he had.
He started out by sending me some of the images he had taken when he was
fifteen, in his memory we show them today as a tribute to our
friendship."

THEME: "Merry Christmas"
Comment: artist Jorge Restrepo (www.jorgerestrepo.com) will make an
installation in the Spanish Cultural Center, Tegucigalpa, Honduras
(Central America). The mail-artworks will show the reality of the
world, the extreme differences in religion, social classes, justice,
poverty, income, access to water, languages…of different countries….of
the world. While some people are partying and celebrating,
gambling…vacationing…in December, others are suffering. Jorge Restrepo
will create an environment of Christmas celebration at the exhibit
rooms of the Center…using the mail-artworks. The observer to the
exhibit will feel the sensation of Christmas decoration. When
attendants look in detail to the decoration (mail-artworks simulating
Christmas cards and messages) the reality of the world will
appear…dramatically…in from of their eyes…
Electronic documentation to all. Please send Email address, name and

Today, my friends, we saw the clearest example of our mission: to confront the culture of power with the power of culture.Despite attempts to prevent the sharing and transmission of culture, Palfest is using all the communications tools at its disposal to reach out -- for videos, photos, blogs and other Palfest updates go here. Here's a video from the opening night:
The story of a man from Guinea who was detained in New Jersey raises questions about accountability and oversight in U.S. immigration detention system.
Israeli forces ended their offensive against Hamas in Gaza on Saturday, 17 January, following the declaration of ceasefires by Hamas and Israel.
Highlighted below are some of the main buildings identified as destroyed or damaged in Gaza City and the surrounding area as of 16 January, when this latest satellite image was taken.
