Miss Universe Visits Guantanamo: 'A Loooot Of Fun!'


The current 'Miss Universe' Dayana Mendoza (formerly Miss Venezuela) and 'Miss America' Crystal Stewart visited US troops stationed in Guantanamo Bay on March 20th, the New York Times reports. Here's Mendoza's account of the visit from her pageant blog last Friday. She says the trip "was a loooot of fun!"

This week, Guantánamo!!! It was an incredible experience...All the guys from the Army were amazing with us. We visited the Detainees camps and we saw the jails, where they shower, how the recreate themselves with movies, classes of art, books. It was very interesting. We took a ride with the Marines around the land to see the division of Gitmo and Cuba while they were informed us with a little bit of history.


The water in Guantánamo Bay is soooo beautiful! It was unbelievable, we were able to enjoy it for at least an hour. We went to the glass beach, and realized the name of it comes from the little pieces of broken glass from hundred of years ago. It is pretty to see all the colors shining with the sun. That day we met a beautiful lady named Rebeca who does wonders with the glasses from the beach. She creates jewelry with it and of course I bought a necklace from her that will remind me of Guantánamo Bay :)

I didn't want to leave, it was such a relaxing place, so calm and beautiful.

The Clean, the Dirty, the Quick'n'Dirty, the Neat and the Noisy





I've been wondering for quite a while now about the dominant presence of "clean" work in Visual Poetry found in current site, blogs and journals. One simple explanation is the increasing use of digitalized technology in creating the work. At its very base, the binary setup of the digital cleans up/filters out a lot of the "dirt" and "noise" of work like mine, where these are an integral part of the poems. The result is work that is sharp and neat, clean, efficient even when "fragmented" or "chaotic". I've wondered if this efficiency and clarity even in a seeming disorder isn't geared towards "time saving" and related to "speed reading" in a sense. At the same time, there seems to be a reawakening of an interest in Minimalism and Concretism, two forms which also are well suited to adaptation by the digital.
It is easy enough to not participate in this simply by using other technologies in making works--typewriters, xerox machines, mimeo machines, etc as well as any kind of hand made works--what I also wondered about was the effects of digitalization on forms of seeing. More and more surrounded by digital images, are people beginning to see more and more in these terms? That is, will the craving for the digital "look" become such that work not produced in this manner may begin to seem --paradoxially---more "imaginary"? or any number of other things--and people will begin living in ever more different visual worlds--as they already do--with now a digital divide added to other levels and subtle gradations of differentiations in seeing--
Oscar Wilde on seeing all the brightly lit signs of Broadway remarked that for the first time he wished he didn't know how to read. There is a condition known as "Alexia" (I have a friend whose name is actually Alexia--)--it's a condition in which the brain neurologically becomes incapable of reading. I wouldn't ever want to reach this point, yet a lot of my work is involved with what I call "deComposition" via various means. Last summer began two series of "Wall paintings"--one was "War Torn Walls" and the other simply Walls with writings on them worn down through time, damage by fires, etc. Since childhood the disintegration of writing on signs, walls in old books, fading newspapers, sides of trucks, fences, on stones, etc etc has fascinated me. The survival of so much of the world's writing as fragments and barely decipherable blurs, ghostly notations, markings hidden in plain sight insures that their discovery will never end. All around one are found letterings, soundings, abandoned and overlooked words, thrown out words, junked and trashed phrases, texts walked by by crowds thousands of time a day, an hour.
I've wondered in turn if seeing these writings in the world a good deal of the time doesn't also come froom being just as interested in cracks in sidewalks and walls, shadows on the ground, forms made by dripping oil from engines, piles of rubble, rusted metals, all sorts of obscure animal and insect and bird signs . . .
Visual Poetry for me isn't a "clean" activity then, but quite a "dirty" and "noisy" one--the visual dirtiness being also a sounding noisiness--a visual noisiness that may be sounded as such--moving in and out of various registers from near silence to walls and sheets of noise . . . noise one can dance with--just as one can to the near silence . . .

I appreciate the notes about digital art, too.

only, I think there are more possibilities than limitations in a digital (apparently aseptic) series of processes linked to dirty & raw material(s) or techniques.

your feelings towards the rusty edges of things & perceptions are mine too. but I think digital codes and "analogic" (!) ones can interweave and create mixed experiments.

it's absolutely of primary importance to save the noise(s) and imperfections in art. and: we see no paradox when we see shots taken with cell phones keepin' that rusty rough polaroid-style shade we are looking for.

digital tools capture the a(na)logic world.

reality itself sends out its very experimental codes. we have a lot of instruments at our disposal to catch that energy and show its faces, also re-encoding them.
